RANDOM THOUGHTS: COLLEGE CONFERENCE MATH.

big 10 logoWith the shifting memberships of college sports conferences, I believed it’s time to provide a clear description of the campus sports affiliations. First, there are 12 teams in the Big 10. That’s as opposed to the Big 12 which has 10 teams and could have nine with Texas A&M leaves in July, more or less depending on who comes and goes.

The Pac 12, formerly the Pac 10, has 12 teams (for the moment). Hopefully that will change since it makes sense. Then there’s the Big East, which will admit Texas Christian University in 2012-13. It won’t necessarily be joining other great Eastern schools like the University of Louisville, which is going to stay with the conference. Probably. Maybe. We think. (Texas Christian, of course, was once part of the Southwest Conference and moved to the Mountain West Conference, among others.) The Southeastern Conference is adding that other great eastern team Texas A&M. The Atlantic Coast Conference is comprised by schools in states that border the Atlantic Ocean, like Pittsburgh. Mountain West might keep TCU if the Big East falls apart, and will be admitting a school with name that reeks of the west, the University of Hawaii (for football only). … This headline caught my eye this week: “Russia hooker gets 3-week ban for head butt at RWC.” “I didn’t know they even had a disciplinary policy,” I told a friend. “How much does a head butt normally cost?” Then I found out it was about a World Cup rugby match.
