RANDOM THOUGHT: ANNETTE FUNICELLO

LAnnette Funicelloet us pause to remember a woman who aroused strong passions and a loyal following and had an immense impact on a generation. Of course, I'm talking about Annette Funicello. Mouse ears were flown at half staff. I hear Margaret Thatcher also died this week… I’m always interested in linguistic overkill.  In Orlando, Fla., a tearful Mickey Mouse tried to sing, "M I C K E Y. Why? because you loved you" but was overcome with grief.

I am always on the lookout for verbal overkill. One news vehicle reported a “Tragic bus accident leads to deaths”. I suppose that is as opposed to a routine bus accident that leads to death. … There was a report last week that a goats head delivered to Wrigley Field in Chicago. Apparently, it was an unsuccessful test of a new snack that could be ordered at baseball games. … Ever mindful of a chance to make a buck, Las Vegas bookies are taking odds on cities that are the most likely targets for a nuclear attack by North Korea. Many Americans outside of the Northeast are requesting New York City. But generally, the North Korean threats have been drowned out by one of the nation’s compelling issues, Kim Kardashian’s weight gain during pregnancy. She may appear in a public service announcement that this is what the activity in her first film can lead to. … As part of the cuts during the follow through on the budget sequester, the administration plans to turn the Statue of Liberty over to Disney, which will reopen the facility as “LibertyLand” after retrofitting the giant lady. ... For millions of Americans, with NCAA basketball over and football between seasons, this is the time of year for that always burning question about professional ice hockey: "Are they still on strike?"
