Bob Costas An eye infection has kept television commentator Bob Costas off the air for several days during the Olympic broadcast. But he looks like a sure bet to play the Eye of Sauron if there's a "Lord of the Rings" sequel. Disease is always a popular topic. Just finished reading one of those Internet news items "Ten signs of heart disease that you'll be convinced you have after reading this article." ... The Olympics at Sochi have been enchanting. During the opening ceremony I was watching the parade of nations and noting those traditional winter powerhouses: Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Dominica, British Virgin Islands, Malta, Hong Kong, Tonga, and Jamaica.

Speaking of traditional winter sports strongholds: a young man from Lawrenceburg, Ind., won bronze in the slopestyle snowboarding competition becoming the first person from that state ever to win a medal in the Winter Olympics. If they played basketball on ice, Indiana would have been dominant. But my main reaction to snowboarders is to think that's the same kind of stuff we used to see on the TV show "Jackass." ... If the survival of humanity depended on children marrying people their parents approved of, the human race would have died out centuries ago. ...A friend just posted on Facebook that the most important thing in life is to find a mate. I think that's second. Number one is to keep breathing. ... This just in: it has been proved that all features in Internet Explorer are weaknesses that can be exploited by hackers. ... If you're just dumb enough there's no limit to what you don't know you can't do. ... Must be a slow news day in one of the local towns because of all the snow here in New Jersey. My Verizon news had the headline "Daisy Troop Visits Firehouse" ... In most businesses, a fool and his money are considered a qualified lead. ... This month, the skeleton of a mammoth was unearthed in Seattle, discovered next to the remains of a prehistoric coffee shop
