RANDOM THOUGHTS: IN ST. PETERSBURG
In St. Petersburg, our guide pointed out at one point, “There are two mints in that building.” I responded, “Did you know that it’s very famous building in America.” “Really?” “Yes, everyone of a certain age knows about two, two, two mints in one.” …. When my daughter heard that the original name of natives of Belarus, Belorussian, translates as “White Russian” she queried, “They named the country after a drink?” “Yes, “I replied. “They fought a long hard war against the Martinis.”
… At one restaurant, I decided to try bear meat, which came out as ground balls to be eaten with a tart berry sauce. “You know what you are eating?” the waiter cautioned, “Eez greezly.” “How is it?” my daughter asked. “Like a very mean hamburger,” I replied. I passed on the beaver. No smirks, please. … One restaurant had a very pleasingly named snack listed as “Bunny Burgers”. “You mean they eat Thumper?” my daughter cried. “Only if he doesn’t move quickly enough.” …. I must have displayed my ignorance of ballet when I asked the usher at the Bolshoi’s performance of “Swan Lake,” “When do they throw out the first swan and what kind of beer do they serve?” The guy next to me wasn’t real friendly either. I was just trying to be nice when I said, “Hey, those girls are almost as good as the Rockettes.” … In our Moscow and St. Petersburg trips, we ended up with restaurants broadcast fashion shows about four times. I haven’t seen so many sullen women since my college dating days. ... The least favorite song of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie? “Take me out to the ball game.” ... I think the hacking that has hit Sony is really having an effect. My new Xbox game's features included the company's detailed financial records.
